Recommendations on IR control

Sat Oct 06, 2018 12:11 pm

I am planning to automate my home theater using MyServer on an old iPad mini. Currently I have a Logitech Harmony. The theater is wired for IR.

What are the recommendations for the IR interface for MyServer? MyServer is running in my main HA closet, the equipment closet for the home theater is about 20 feet away but I do have cable access between the two.

For the iPad I am looking at an iPort with inductive charging - not cheap but at least there is a hope that my kids will put it back on the charger occasionally.

Thanks.

When you are saying IR interface...do you mean the hardware? or the graphical user interface?
If hardware - global Cache.
You can use a GC IRE to "hear" the buttons you push on your Harmony.
There is also the Harmony driver that can "hear" the custom buttons you push.
There is also the "No-Touch Remote" graphical user interface screens that are close to release.
Overall, move off of IR when it makes sense. myServer can abstract between your IR button pushes and Non-IR devices (serial / IP etc).
Most good equipment now supports more than IR.

My initial thought was to ditch the harmony and use the iPad for controlling everything. Unlike our family room we don’t use the remote much when watching in the theater.

So what hardware would be recommended to connect to Myserver that I can control from the touchscreen to send IR commands to my home theater setup. I am stuck with IR right now as most of my home theater equipment only has IR control.

IP2iR would be a good one if you need to use ethernet to get into the room.

I second the GC products. Extremely reliable and wired as well as wireless options. Sometimes you have no choice but to use IR (Apple TV, cable set top boxes, a lot of TV manufacturers still don't support IP or serial control yet)
