The more I think about this, the harder it seems.
The problem with a Kodi startup script is that it is possible to exit the Kodi app without shutting down Kodi. So, the next time you open the app, it returns you to where you left off. No startup script on reentry.
And this made me realize that I'm going to have the same problem, in reverse, when I close the Kodi app. I'm going to want the remote to go back to the Shield screen.
Without the ability to react to the opening and closing of the Kodi app, I only see two alternatives:
1. Don't use the Kodi driver. Get a Video Storm IRUSB and use keyboard commands to control Kodi above and beyond the basic Shield remote.
2. Don't run Kodi on the Shield. Purchase a dedicated box to run Kodi. And if I go this route, it might be better to take the money I would have spent on the IRUSB and put it towards the purchase of an Apple TV.
