MyDesigner and SMB issues...

Apologies for the flood of responses (last one, I promise), but in the hope this sheds some light, I have done the following.

1.  CMD > control userpasswords2 > delete all windows credentials associated with the server.
2.  Delete the network mapping.
3.  Restart.
4.  Run MyDesigner 6.  Unsurprisingly, no project files listed.
5.  Map network drive > \\[IP ADDRESS]\myServer > 'Connect using different credentials' > allonis | allonis.
6.  Drive succesfully mapped.  Contents displayed
7.  MyDesigner 6 > refresh 'Project Files' > All projects now listed, can be navigated, loaded and edited.
8.  However, 'three dots' icon to browse eg images causes MyDesigner to hang.  Relative path to image can instead be manually typed into the relevant dialogue box and correct image loads (but what a pain). 
9.  Server now appears in Network Discovery (since installation of WSDD).
10. When clicked on, credentials box appears with the following text in red, 'The system cannot contact a domain controller to service the authentication request.  Please try again later.'
11.  Nevertheless, I can choose 'more choices' > use a different account > allonis | allonis, but nothing happens.

I am wondering whether the error message in step 10 sheds any light.  A bit of googling (which quickly became network admin forums and I was out of my depth) suggests perhaps a DNS server issue?  If it is of any relevance I run a piHole which acts as my DNS server.  resolv.conf points to the piHole (and in any event the server has no problem connecting to the internet for updates etc).

If any of the above gives a clue as to what my issue is, would be very grateful for a pointer in the right direction.

In settings, amended file share to point to my mapped drive (Z:)  

all now working exactly as expected - thank you so much.

I run myServer in a virtual machine on a QNAP.  After installing and configuring Samba, I also installed WSDD (Web Service Discovery Daemon) which makes a Samba host discoverable by Windows clients.  (sudo apt install wsdd)

Assuming you are running on Allonis supplied hardware, I don't know if installing WSDD is an option.  But I suspect it would solve your problem.


 

Hi!

Could you please explain how you managed to get myServer as a VM on Qnap?  I'm trying to set mine up as a VM on a synology as I hate having the pi as an extra hardware item on my setup...

I tried importing the disk image from the Allonis myserver downloads (linux x64) but it doesnt boot up, and looking at the files it doesnt seem to be an image of a full OS...

It is possible, but you need to be familiar with Linux. 

The basic instructions are located here:

myServer Virtual Environment Installation

Here is an outline,

1.  Install whatever package is necessary to create virtual machines.
2.  Download Ubuntu server from ubuntu.com
3.  Create the virtual machine using this image.
4.  Install the OS.  Set a static IP.  I used the same username and password that I login to Windows with.  Install open SSH server.
5.  Download and install Putty on your Windows machine.  It is easier to configure the server from that console than within the QNAP/Synology UI.
6.  Prepare the OS for myServer.  Setup the allonis user.  Modify the sudo group to not prompt for a password.  Allow a non-root process to bind privileged ports.  Expand the swap file.  Create the directory where myServer will be installed.
7.  Install the required packages.  I installed:  Nmap, NodeJS and NPM, Frontail, Unzip, NFS-Common, Samba, WSDD, Docker, ADB, Shell In a Box.
8.  Copy the myServer files and start the Services.

If you feel comfortable with this, go ahead and start a new thread with your questions, and I will do the best I can to answer them.
