Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible to power a Myserver 6 using a POE splitter?  I’m trying to cut down on the amount of power adapters.

I did more research on powering a Raspberry PI 4 over a POE splitter and it looks like, in theory, it should work.  It looks like myServer 6 will run on less than 30 watts which is what most POE switches will handle per port. 

After, further research I have found a conflict of information.  
- On the rewards pages of the Kickstarter event the shelf mount myServer 6 says there is a 12 volt 2a wall wart included.
- On the Allonis products page the shelf mount myServer 6 has a 3.5 amp USB-C Power Supply - wall mount included.

David,  please clarify which Power Supply will be shipped with the shelf mount myServer 6?

Hi, the Shelf / rack mount controllers are out of the box Raspberry Pi4 4 gig.  There are many POE hats available for that.  Just keep cooling in mind as fans/ heat sinks sometimes compete for GPIO and physical space with a Pi Hat (like a POE Pi hat)

The Shelf mount has a 12 volt 2A wall wart power supply to thin coaxial connector (not a standard PI usb-c).  This is to power the SSD and the Pi4.
There have been multiple shelf / rack mount systems that we have sold...most use usb-c...this one uses 12volt 2 Amp.

So, consider the SSD in the power strategy too.
You should plan to power the Pi via a UPS (or your POE injector / hub).  You don't want the Pi to be power cycled ungracefully.  Russian Roulett on corrupting the drive disk.

I would get the solution as is, and then look carefully at the case / heat sink to see if a POE solution is valid.  But that's all up to you.  Me?  I would plug the current 12v wallwart into a UPS and be done.

We love this hardware solution because there almost always is a YES answer.

Thank you David.  

From my research on Raspberry PI 4’s running on a “Hat” is that the PI will run hot and typically should be uncovered.  If I do decide to go the POE route I will probably look at the POE splitter alternative solution.

Just keep in mind, this is a pretty compact case with peripherals connected to the PI...all of which makes it more challenging to add a HAT. The cooler is special for the case. That's why I suggest you get the case as is so you can hands on see if a hat will work or not. We will be building a bunch this week so i will take a peek.

I prefer not to use a Hat as to your point of having to get into the case and possibly having heat issues.  The POE splitter being connected directly to the ethernet and power ports outside the box should be a better solution in theory.

I have one of my "Pi 4s" running with a POE splitter. Works. But research power requirements and available power that comes from the splitter. For example, mine supposedly puts out 3 amps. Well, we all know how much the tech world likes to fib or miss represent. So, I'll defer to David Li, but in limited conditions I do know that the splitter can work.    But if you got a lot of power hungry hardware connected, then well, your milage may vary.
