I've had this happen once or twice and also didn't see anything in the logs to suggest a root cause. A simple reboot of the remotes fixed it and I just moved on. By and large your method has worked brilliantly for me.

I can't even begin to tell you how excited that makes me!

There is a significant system update available that enables a few, key features:

• The SmartRemote screen now shuts completely off when the Remote goes to sleep.  Sleep timing is set in Android Settings / Display / Sleep
• The Hard buttons now can be set to turn ON when motion is sensed.  You can adjust the time the buttons stay backlit in the new SmartRemote Settings page.  Default is 15 seconds.
• A new feature of "Find my Remote" has been added to myServer's growing list of commands.  This will wakeup the SmartRemote, turn on the Display, turn on the hard button backlights and Chirp the speaker so you now can find the remote in the sofa cushions (or to figure out which room you left it in).

As a side benefit, most users will see longer battery life in between charges.

You will need the latest myServer, the latest SmartRemote Template, the AndroidTV driver installed, and update the smartremote.apk that lives on the SmartRemote.
The documentation has been updated with the details as all new SmartRemotes will need to update the smartremote.apk once it is on the myServer network for these features to be enabled.

Here are some of the details:

6/26/2024: Allonis added support for the SmartRemote's backlighting of the hard buttons, revised algorithms for controlling screen on / off, and the new "Find my Remote" feature.  To enable these functions, you will need to be on latest myServer build, and latest SmartRemote Template. So, if you have a SmartRemote that is on the myServer network:

1) Install latest myServer build from myServer's Software Updater.
2) Ensure you also have latest AndroidTV Driver and have added your SmartRemote to the list of Android Devices.
3) Update to the latest SmartRemote Template.  Backup your custom webpages and change the smartremote-sampler file name to "smartremote" folder name.  You can also copy back your custom webpages from your backup.
4)  Restart myServer
5) Ensure that the SmartRemote is online.  You can ping it's IP address.  Advanced: you can do a "adb devices" from a terminal window on the myServer controller (Raspberry Pi / Linux versions only).  You should see your SmartRemote's IP on port 55055 as connected.
6) Do this CAREFULLY: From the AndroidTV Driver Commands window, select "Forced Uninstall" and select the SmartRemote.  Run the command.  The SmartRemote icon will be removed, and the SmartRemote will reboot itself.  Make sure you select "smartremote" so it gets included in the command to process!!!
7) Post reboot of the SmartRemote, do a "Install" from the AndroidTV Driver command list.  Select smartremote as the device type.  Run this command.
Soon, you should see the SmartRemote app icon on the SmartRemote.  Click to launch it.
9) Accept all permissions and select to add SmartRemote icon.
10) Click to launch the SmartRemote Icon.  You should automatically connect to your myServer instance if you had that setup as default.  If there wasn't a default, then you should click to Launch myServer.
11), Once the myServer smartremote home page is launched, you can click the Dot Dot Dot hard button.  You will see on the smartremote settings page that you can change the timing behaviour of the hard buttons.  Default is for Backlight to never turn on.  Enable it to turn on the backlight when motion is detected that stays on for 15 seconds after no motion is detected.
12) The backlight timing to got to sleep is an Android settings.  Click on Dot Dot Dot and click on Exit SmartRemote button.  Go to Settings (Android) and click on Display.  Set Sleep timeout.  Default is 30 seconds.  Once set, you can leave the Android Settings by clicking the SmartRemote Back button a few times.
13) Launch the SmartRemote icon.  Once launched to go myServer and run the "FindMyRemote|<<myremotename>>" .  If the SmartRemote is sleeping (display off, but on the network), the remote will wake up (Screen and button backlight turns on) and a loud chime will be heard from the SmartRemote to assist you in locating it between the couch pillows.  You can put same command in a custom button using myDesigner if you want as well.  You might want to do this from the moonlightsmartphones or tablet user interface (since the SmartRemote is "lost").

Hey David I just followed these directions for this on one of my remotes with semi-mixed results. It's working-ish.

I click on the 3 dots and it takes me to the Allonis About page. I then click on Change Settings and it runs the ResetDefault client command, taking me to Server Connection Options. This page is as it always has been, allowing me to configure the myServer IP, remote name, and Project Name. I have no option to change the button behavior on this page. I tried scrolling the page and it is just blank space below these options. Am I digging in the wrong place?

Having said that, I did exit out of the app to the Android dashboard and checked the settings for Display Sleep and it was set for 30 seconds, as described. I reloaded the SmartRemote APK and set it down and waited. The sleep function works! Also, when I pick it up it reliably detects the movement and wakes it back up! Furthermore, the backlight buttons WORK when it wakes up even though the default is supposed to be off and I don't seem to have the option to change it.

Any ideas on how I can get the settings to change the backlight behavior to appear? The backlight keys shut off after 15 seconds but I'd like to match them to the screen timeout and 15 seconds is too short of an interval for me. Actually, the sensitivity of the accelerometer seems dramatically improved from when I first set up my remotes (they are not constantly turning on and off anymore at the tiniest vibration) so ideally I'd prefer both the screen and hardkeys to remain on as long as it detects movement, but if that can't happen 30 seconds for both seems like a reasonable compromise to me.

Findmyremote doesn't seem to work for me at all. I can see the command being issued from the server but the remote doesn't respond at all. I personally don't care about this at all so I'm not sweating it but it might be an issue for some of the other owners.

So there's a kink or two that I'd like to get worked out here but even still this is a MASSIVE improvement. This is much more like what I envisioned when I first purchased the system. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

It sounds like you are missing update the SmartRemote Template

You don't need to click "change settings".  The hard button configuration should be right there on the About page.  If not, you are missing the page from the Template.  Maybe you overwrote it with a custom page?  Maybe redownload and just use the out of the box to ensure all else is working.  Then determine which of your custom pages is breaking it.
